History
Part of the highland terrier group, the Scottish terrier hails from Aberdeen with the modern breed originating from the standard of breed formulated in 1880. The unofficial emblem of Scotland is an independent and rugged breed of dog with its characteristic wiry coat were originally used by Scottish farmers protect their crops and livestock from foxes, badgers, weasels and rats.
Description
The Scottish Terrier is a sturdy little dog with short yet powerful legs that makes it surprisingly agile. They have a rough textured coat which is weather resistant with a soft dense undercoat. The colourings of coat come in black, brindle or wheaten.
Temperament
Although inclined to be stubborn and feisty, the Scottish Terrier is a loyal, alert and agile dog known for its courage which is a trait from its early days of protecting Scottish farms which can also make the Scottie a great little watchdog.
Grooming
Twice weekly brushing is required and it is important that extra care is taken when the dog is molting. Bathe dog when necessary, and the coat should be professionally clipped twice a year to keep coat neat and tangle free.
Exercise and Diet
Although large backyards are not required, these dogs still require daily exercise and stimulation. Due to its hunting instincts it is better to keep on-leash when walking as it can be enticing for a Scottie to chase after a bird or any other suburban wildlife you may come across. There are no special feeding requirements for the breed, just be careful not to overfeed which leads to obesity and general laziness.
Health Issues
A generally robust breed, the Scottish Terrier can be prone to skin ailments and sensitivity to fleas and general eye conditions such as cataracts and glaucoma. The average life span for the Scottish Terrier is 11 - 13 years of age.
